Where do you measure the ring gear to determine the ring gear diameter?

Some where on the ring gear, or on the ring gear mounting surface diameter?

I have heard of diameters of 6.38 , 6.7, 7.1, and 7.5.

I CAN TELL YOU THAT 6.3 IS AN EIGHT BOLT. THE OTHERS ARE 10 BOLTS. ONLY THE 6.7 WAS USED IN THE CARS, WITH REAR DRUM BRAKES, THE OTHER ARE OUT OF OTHER VEHCLES, LIKE THE THE CARS WITH REAR DISC'S, P/U'S AND THE VANS. THE 7.+ 3RD MEMBERS ALSO USED LARGER AXLES THAN THE 6.7. IF THAT IS ANY HELP.
